It's that time of year again!

The end of each year is a time of self-reflection. We ponder about the year that passed and how we can improve the year ahead. At the end of every year, I always have a resolution, a behavior I want to change that will bring me more balance in the year ahead. Yet, despite my best intentions, I have often struggled to see the task through. I start strong, only to lose my way and momentum soon after.

Last year, I made yet another resolution, only this time followed simple but powerful guidelines, and voila, success!

My goal was to become more informed regarding world news. International headlines have always intrigued me, and while I read the paper daily, I rarely found the time to delve in and make a thorough connection to what I was reading. I tended to rush through, anxious to move along with my day. I knew that if I wanted to get past the headlines I would have to buckle-up and dive deep.

To get started, I implemented basic strategies that helped me stay motivated and on track.

First, I set sub-goals as accessible steppingstones to lead me towards my final objective.

When we set goals that are too far out of reach, we get overwhelmed and give up, leaving us feeling unaccomplished and defeated. Keeping our goals within reach helps us stay positive, centered, and in control.

Setting smaller, reachable goals also allows us to easily measure progress. Measuring progress keeps us organized and enables us to see things realistically, and if needed, fine-tune our plan before falling behind.

Forming specific timelines to follow is another essential tip. Having definite start and end dates for sub-goals encourages us to stay committed and accountable while discouraging procrastination.

Consistency is another key component and is critical for developing and sustaining new habits. Through repetition, actions become innate and eventually ingrained in our subconscious mind. This discipline also helps develop determination and build self-esteem.

I dedicated one hour every day for a month to read about relevant topics circulating the world to get started. Even on days when it was inconvenient, or I lacked motivation, I forced myself to have the discipline to sit down and read. Repeating this ritual daily eventually became more effortless and truly rewarding. The time I devoted to reading increased and ultimately became an integral part of my day that always left me feeling accomplished and fulfilled.

Having a support system is extremely important as well. Sharing our goals with loved ones who are encouraging and supportive will inspire us to stay motivated and responsible. They can also provide insight and feedback as well as a well-deserved pat on the back!

Before getting underway, I shared my thoughts with my husband, knowing how supportive and constructive he would be. I knew he believed in me and would continuously support me.

Implementing these five basic guidelines directed me towards success!

This focus and commitment I maintained throughout the year gave me awareness of so many issues I knew little about. I became exceptionally enthusiastic and started actively supporting causes that were close to my heart.

We can all achieve absolutely anything we set our minds to. Our capabilities are boundless. Often, it’s just the planning or lack thereof that determines our victory.

Lastly, I want to emphasize the importance of honoring yourself throughout your endeavor. The journey towards your goal should be enjoyable and rewarding, full of patience and self-love. Make sure to recognize your effort and take the time to celebrate your accomplishments along the way. Even if you have a setback, so what! We are all human, not machines. Instead of feeling despondent, speak kindly to yourself with the respect you deserve. Continue where you left off with vigor and positivity, feeling pride every step of the way!

Maintaining optimism will undoubtedly encourage, motivate, and inspire you until your resolution is finally met.

YOU’VE GOT THIS!

I wish you a happy and healthy new year full of confidence and success.
